Ensenada Daze

This guy didn’t have a nice shop for us to go into, instead he ran the block. His menu consisted of cannabis, mushrooms, heroin and meth.

There are knockoffs for just about everything in Mexico. The Ray-Bans looked even better then these.

Coincidence?

Hip hop’s Down Beat

Photo: Kenneth Dickerman for TIME

“The lesson was Capitalism 101: rap music’s market strength gave its artists permission to say what they pleased. And the rappers themselves exhibited an entrepreneurial bent unlike that of musicians before them. They understood the need to market and the benefits of line extensions. Theirs was capitalism with a beat.
Today that same market is telling rappers to please shut up. While music-industry sales have plummeted, no genre has fallen harder than rap. According to the music trade publication Billboard, rap sales have dropped 44% since 2000 and declined from 13% of all music sales to 10%. Artists who were once the tent poles at rap labels are posting disappointing numbers. Jay-Z’s return album, Kingdom Come, for instance, sold a gaudy 680,000 units in its first week, according to Billboard. But by the second week, its sales had declined some 80%. This year rap sales are down 33% so far.”

HOLOCAUST CHIC?

August 13, 2007
Okay, l realize prison garb is considered "cool" in streetwear as of lately, but this is fucking nuts.

This morning a friend of mine sent me a link to a site that was featuring the new Bounty Hunter pieces. He said I "have to click on it, and scroll down to the last picture"…so I did, and my jaw dropped at what I saw… Hikaru is releasing Warsaw Ghetto/ Concentration Camp shirts. I immediately asked my self, "does he even know what he is releasing?"…because usually, judging from all his previous ‘Nam references, etc…he doesn’t. He just sees things and slaps it on a tee, and most of the time the references are all wrong, misspelled then screen printed poorly. So, as I was looking at his latest Anti-Semitic Auschwitz top, I was hoping (for his sake) he didn’t know what this all meant, at least he could claim ignorance when the Simon Wiesenthal foundation comes banging on his door…

After chatting with my friend about all this, he asked me if I have seen the new Stussy jackets that seemed to be referencing the same issues? He sent me an email…once again, I was shocked, and amazed at all this. When did the memo go out that said "the holocaust was chic again"?…because I didn’t receive it.

We ended our conversation talking about what Comme Des Garcons designer, Rei Kawakubo, and her venture into this taboo subject. She designed a line similar in 1995 for her mens spring collection, that debuted at her Paris show. The worlds Jewish Congress demanded that the concentration camp styled-garb be removed from the collection. Her response was, "I am shocked and saddened" that the clothes elicited anything other than the aura of "sleep".
